Huge industry demand for Garment Technologists

This one year full time course delivered two days per week focuses on product development for mass production. It will teach the range of skills required for the role, including how to suggest modifications to garment designs, advising on fabric suitability, how and where to source new technology fabrics, ensuring the most appropriate construction methods are used to keep production within budget and how to oversee fabric testing and fit sessions.

You will develop team working and negotiation skills to gain an in-depth understanding of how to communicate effectively with factories, pattern cutters, graders, buyers and design teams.

This course includes a three week work placement with a major fashion brand to cement your knowledge with on the job experience to secure your future in fashion retail.


This course content is constantly evolving to include the continual changes and challenges within the garment technologist role and is ideal for those interested in the technical development of clothing.  Students enjoying this course will be passionate about fashion, clothing and how retailers clothing fit differently. The programme covers the life of a garment from design to manufacture and this is completed through practical exploration and theoretical reasoning.

The focus of the course will be investigating how clothes fit against customer profiling. There are industry projects set by fashion brands to provide students with the opportunity to come up with new fit suggestions and analyse their current collection.

You will be invited to attend a range of masterclasses from some of retails biggest names. Previous speakers have included ASOS; Chloe Miles – Fashion Blogger; Zalando; FRA Alumni Sorcha Kelly, Junior Merchandiser - Accessories at NET-A-PORTER; TK Maxx & New Look. During these sessions held in our state of the art lecture theatre, fashion retail experts advise and inform about a range of subjects affecting the industry with an interactive Q&A session at the end to enable students to have their say.

Age Requirement: 18+

Course duration: One year, two days per week

Entry Criteria:  1 A-Level or the equivalent grade C or above and 5 GCSE’s grade 4/5-9 including Maths and English or 5 GCSE's A*-C grade including Maths and English, or a BTEC National Diploma or NVQ level 3, or a one year one year foundation diploma in Art and Design plus 5 GCSE’s grade 4/5-9 including Maths and English or 5 GCSE's A*-C grade including Maths and English. Please provide us with a NARIC Statement of Comparability, if you have any non-UK qualifications. We will not be able to process your application without this information.

Applicant Guidance:  Interest in the world of fashion and retail, what’s on trend in the high street and which retailer or designer inspires you.  An interest in garment construction and fit and problem solving skills

Fees: Fees for this course are £4,220.  Advanced learning loans are available. Free if under 19 on 31st August the year your course starts
