Start date: September 2022
Location: Stevenage
Application closing date: 20th February, 2022

About us

Do you have a passion for Manufacturing Engineering and are looking to work within the Space industry?

The Mechanical Design Office (MDO) at Airbus Defence & Space is responsible for spacecraft product design from concept through to production. As part of Airbus’ transnational central engineering function, we are focused on Digital Transformation. We use the latest Dassault digital tool set, 3DX Catia V6, to evolve our methodologies and maximise efficiency across the end-to-end design, and manufacturing processes.

Join us in Assembly Engineering in Stevenage, and gain a solid foundation in spacecraft production methodologies. As well as learning how telecommunications satellites are built, you’ll have the opportunity to develop strong team relationships and one day, make an impact on the efficiency of our technical processes. It’s an exciting opportunity to receive second-to-none vocational training and a regular salary.

What you will be doing

Throughout this degree apprenticeship, you’ll divide your time between university and Airbus’ Stevenage site.

While ‘in the office’ in Stevenage, you will be part of a multi-functional Assembly Engineering project team with an MDO Lead Designer assigned as your mentor, and you’ll work alongside other specialist engineering disciplines. We’re all passionate about finding technical solutions to support Telecom and Exploration Satellite missions, and will help you develop technically and personally in the role, too.

Within the project team, you’ll complete early customisation and development design challenges and be required to evolve the Spacecraft Assembly Digital Mock-up in 3DX. This will lead into the generation and configuration of the required manufacturing data for production.

As well as this, you’ll undertake several placement rotations in various design teams, including our:

  • Structure Design group
  • Antenna Products group, and
  • Propulsion Systems Engineering group.

Wherever possible, these rotations will align with your course modules so you have the opportunity to apply your new knowledge, to your work.

To join this apprenticeship, you must have a minimum of:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade 4/C or above, including English, Mathematics and a Science, Technology or Engineering-related subject, and
  • A-Levels (or equivalent) at Grade C or above in both Mathematics and a Science, Technology or Engineering-related subject, or 90+ credits in an Engineering BTEC at Level 3, or
  • Equivalent qualifications.

You also will be able to demonstrate:

  • A keen interest in Mechanical Design, Space technologies, CAD and digital design tool technologies
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

As an Airbus apprentice, you’ll be working on real projects while you’re studying to achieve your qualifications. That’s why we make sure you’re properly rewarded for the work you do. You’ll be entitled to:

  • A competitive salary
  • 25 days annual leave including bank holidays
  • 35-hour working week
  • Access to an independent, 24-hour confidential counselling service.

Please note, we love your interest in working for Airbus but we do ask that you make only one application. We encourage you to take time to decide which of our exciting opportunities is right for you and then submit an application that best represents you, your skills and experience in connection with the role you have selected.
