Join our Medical project in Tanzania to gain valuable work-experience alongside some of the most skilled doctors in the country. You will find yourself working in both small health clinics and large government hospitals.
Medicine volunteers in Tanzania work with a variety of medical institutions in and around the town of Arusha in northern Tanzania and in the coastal city of Dar es Salaam. There are many different departments in the majority of the hospitals we work with including maternity, general medicine, surgery, and paediatrics. Volunteers can choose whether they want to work in a variety of different departments or whether they want to focus on one in particular.
As with all medical related placements your role will depend on your level of experience and skill. This medical placement is largely observational, but showing enthusiasm and initiative and developing a good relationship with the local staff may lead to you gaining a more hands-on role. Regular medical workshops are run for volunteers to learn techniques and skills which can be put into practice during their placement.
Facilities within the hospitals and clinics are basic and treatments are sometimes not of the standard we would expect in the West. You should be prepared to see some shocking cases and try not to get emotionally involved with the patients. Your working hours will usually be decided on a weekly basis, however most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free.
"My time in Arusha really helped me grow as a person having to communicate with local people from all different social backgrounds and with volunteers from all around the world. The placement and experience I gained through my hospital placement has really helped improve my CV and also in my application to study medicine in the UK". - Kieran Dash
