A career at sea in the Merchant Navy is a rewarding and exciting career which offers the chance to travel the world on board various ships and gain unique experiences.

As a Deck Officer you would be a vital member of the crew on board a vessel, responsible for the safe navigation of the ship, loading and discharging of cargo, overseeing all safety drills and managing the deck crew.

Training as a Deck Officer Cadet involves around 3 years of sponsored training, including both academic and practical work during the cadetship. At the end of this you gain not only an academic qualification but the professional qualification of the Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (OOW CoC) which allows you to work as a Merchant Navy Deck Officer on board ships around the globe.

Deck Officer training courses with Clyde Marine Training can begin at a variety of different levels from age 16 upwards, as below:

  • If you hold 4 Standard Grades / National 5s / GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English, Maths and a Science you could study on the HNC/D course. You would complete a college course in Nautical Science, as well as gaining at least 12 months sea time with a shipping company and gain vocational qualifications and experience
  • If you hold at least 120 UCAS points from Highers or A-Levels including Maths and/or Physics, plus the above Standard Grades / National 5s / GCSEs you could start on the Professional Diploma / Foundation Degree course. As well as completing 12 months practical training onboard a ship you would also be studying Marine Operations at a Nautical College or University.
  • Once you have gained a HNC/D or Professional Diploma / Foundation Degree and have spent time working at sea as a deck officer cadet you can further your education and gain a Degree in Marine Operations.
  • While working at sea you would have excellent opportunities to advance through the ranks, working towards becoming Captain of the vessel and gaining the relevant Certificates of Competency (CoC) as you progress.

Whatever level you study at, you would gain unrivalled qualifications which allow you to follow a fantastic career in an ever evolving industry which pays you throughout your training and has excellent opportunities for advancement.
