Thinking of a career in electronics? Why not think about specialising in Marine Electronics? With the size of vessels increasing and never ending advances in technology there is growing need for Electro-Technical Officers onboard Merchant navy ships.

Electro-Technical Officers (ETO’s) are on board to maintain and repair any systems with an electronic element. This can range from complex engine room control systems to radars and electronic chart systems on the bridge. ETO’s are also involved with cargo operations, the range of work varying dependant on the type of vessel.

Training as an ETO involves around 3 years of sponsored training, including both academic and practical work. At the end of this you will gain a Foundation Degree in Marine Electrical/Electronics and a Certificate of Competency for Electro-technical Officer (COC).

The Foundation Degree in Marine Electrical/Electronics is currently held at South Tyneside College, with one intake starting in September of each year.

  • As an ETO trainee you would also be expected to complete at least 8 months on board a vessel, gaining the required practical experience.
  • You must hold at least 120 UCAS points from Higher or A-Levels including Maths and/or Physics plus at least 4 Standard Grades / National 5s / GCSEs at level 3 or above (which must include Maths, English and a science based subject) to start on the ETO Foundation Degree/Professional Diploma training course.

Through the Merchant Navy you can gain excellent qualifications, unique experiences and a fantastic career in an industry in which you are paid throughout your training.
