Two A Levels or a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma or other equivalent Level 3 vocational qualification, plus 4 GCSEs at grade 9-4 (grade A*- C) in English language, maths and a science subject.
For Students returning to education, other qualifications and experience will be taken into consideration when processing applications. Also an international equivalent of the above will be considered.
All students who are non-native English speakers and who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English, must demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to IELTS 5.5; Reading and Writing must be at 5.5 or equivalent.
Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at students who completed Level 3 construction and the built environment qualification and Level 3 plumbing or Electrical installation qualification and wanting to continue their education through applied learning to gain the experience of the breadth and depth of the building services sector that will prepare them for further study or training.
The course is for students with a clear line of sight to progression to HND at Level 5 and to a degree at Level 6, as well as to gain the skill for work readiness in the sector.
The course will cover the following units:
- Individual Project- to work as a team to define, plan and execute a successful project using critical thinking skill needed in various roles within the industry.
- Construction Technology- It cover technological concepts used to enable the construction of building by understanding the functional characteristics and design considerations.
- Science & Materials- to make material choices to achieve the desired outcomes of a design considering the environmental impact, sustainability, H&S awareness, and the legislative requirements using calculations.
- Construction Practice & Management- to investigate and research the modern construction industry and apply practical skills embedded within the industry and gain the skills of management.
- Mathematics for Construction- to employ mathematical skills like critical thinking, problem solving, analysis, reasoning, within a variety of contextualised examples and interpret data using statistical techniques.
- Principles of Heating Services Design & Installation- to understand the principles of design, sizing and specification of non-domestic heating systems and components using skills like adaptability & resilience.
- Construction Information- to develop an awareness of different types of construction information and their uses in the process including drawing, detailing, CAD, BIM, schedules, specifications, BoQ.
- Principles of Ventilation & Air Conditioning Design & Installation- to develop the skill to design and install of ventilation and air conditioning systems that are present in all of the buildings we use in everyday life.
You will study 15 supervised hours per week – made up of 11 hours theory, 3 hours practical activities and 1 hour tutorial. This works out as:
- 74% classroom based teaching
- 20% workshop and laboratory experiments
- 6% directed study and site visits.
You’ll be expected to spend about 22.5 hours per week in independent study - unsupervised at home, in the LRC or the workplace. This works out as:
- 10 hours working on assignment (45%)
- 5 hours research/ learning (22%)
- 2.5 hours compilation of evidences (11%)
- 5 hours e-learning (22%).
How is the course assessed
The course is assessed using 12 written assignments assessed and marked by your tutors. One assignment is set by Pearson - the remaining 11 assignments are HCUC set assignments. Assignments cover both the theory and the practical elements of the assessment at the ratio 4:1.
