As a Royal Air Force Fabricator, Welder and Machinist (RAF General Technician Workshops) you will repair and even make essential parts needed for our aircraft, vehicles and equipment. It’s a highly skilled job; you’ll be trained to use kit such as lathes, drilling machines and welding equipment to carry out precision engineering tasks.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Use manual and computer-operated machinery like drilling, milling, cutting and forming equipment
  • Manufacture or modify aircraft parts to strict standards
  • Consult with Aircraft Technicians on the best methods of component removal and fitting

We offer an apprenticeship with an almost guaranteed job at the end (99.8%).  Throughout the apprenticeship and beyond, there are opportunities for adventurous training, sport and an excellent benefits package.  As a training provider we are rated as Ofsted Outstanding.  Our apprentices earn over twice the minimum apprenticeship wage with annual incremental rises (performance related).  You can expect to earn £15K in training and £18.5K after, with the potential to earn £48K at career end.

The RAF Fabricator, Weder & Machinist is not just an apprenticeship; we take applications up to the age of 30 for those who want a change in job into a rewarding and varied role.

Qualifications you need;

GCSEs at Grade C (Grade 4 to 5 with effect from Aug 17) or equivalent in English language, Mathematics or SCE Standard Grades at Grade 2/Scottish National 5 in English, Mathematics and an approved Science/Technology-based subject.

Those 15 years and 9 months can apply based on expected results with an earliest entry of 16 years of age.

Other entry requirements;

You must be a UK citizen or holder of dual UK/other nationality

Whether or not you were born in the UK, you should have resided there for 5 years immediately preceding your application


RAF Workshop Technicians will be enrolled on an Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacture with the opportunity to further achieve a further recognised mechanical manufacturing qualification and a NVQ Level 3 in fabrication and welding.  On successful completion of your qualifications you will embark on an exciting and varied career!
