As a Royal Air Force Fabricator, Welder and Machinist (RAF General Technician Workshops) you will repair and even make essential parts needed for our aircraft, vehicles and equipment. It’s a highly skilled job; you’ll be trained to use kit such as lathes, drilling machines and welding equipment to carry out precision engineering tasks.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Use manual and computer-operated machinery like drilling, milling, cutting and forming equipment
  • Manufacture or modify aircraft parts to strict standards
  • Consult with Aircraft Technicians on the best methods of component removal and fitting

We offer an apprenticeship with an almost guaranteed job at the end.  Throughout the apprenticeship and beyond, there are opportunities for adventurous training, sport and an excellent benefits package.  As a training provider we are rated as Ofsted Outstanding.  Our apprentices earn over twice the minimum apprenticeship wage with annual incremental rises (performance related).  You can expect to earn £17K (Averaged) in training and £20K+ soon after, with incremental rises year on year.

The RAF Fabricator, Weder & Machinist is not just an apprenticeship; we take applications up to the age of 47 for those who want a change in job into a rewarding and varied role.

Qualifications you need;

GCSEs at Grade C (Grade 4 to 5 with effect from Aug 17) or equivalent in English language, Mathematics or SCE Standard Grades at Grade 2/Scottish National 5 in English, Mathematics and an approved Science/Technology-based subject.

You must be a UK citizen or holder of dual UK/other nationality

Whether or not you were born in the UK, you should have resided there for 5 years immediately preceding your application


RAF Workshop Technicians will be enrolled on an Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacture with the opportunity to further achieve a further recognised mechanical manufacturing qualification and a NVQ Level 3 in fabrication and welding.  On successful completion of your qualifications you will embark on an exciting and varied career!
