Volunteers joining our School Sports in South Africa placement help to develop the skills of disadvantaged youngsters who would not otherwise get the chance to play a form of sport.
The aim of this project is to get children from the townships off the streets in the afternoons by providing them with sports coaching. By giving the children the opportunity to participate in sports, we allow them to learn important lessons such as working as a team, anger management and prioritising a healthy lifestyle.
The schools in the local Cape Flats townships where we volunteer are all government run and as such the need for physical education has regrettably been removed from the curriculum due to budget cutbacks. Government-funded schools no longer offer this subject because they cannot afford to pay a sports teacher out of their own small budget. Volunteers are thus invaluable to these schools as they can provide the important physical education lessons without the extra costs.
Almost every other sporting option is possible as the children are eager to learn and by creating a welcoming sporting environment for the children you will be giving them the confidence to participate and conbribute to the lessons.
