 Revenue and Customs Digital Technology Services (RCDTS) is an IT company, wholly owned by HMRC and aligned within the Chief Digital and Information Office (CDIO). The group sets the technology direction for HMRC and is responsible for the delivery and support of a large, complex and diverse IT estate. The focus of the RCDTS business is to work alongside HMRC CDIO colleagues in cohesive teams to develop and maintain that IT estate.


Job overview

RCDTS provides HM Revenue & Customs with managed information technology services, which directly contribute to the support and running of HMRC.

Software Developers work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary agile scrum teams to develop outstanding software that exceeds customer expectations. As a Software Developer at RCDTS, you will sit at the heart of the transformation of our services and will ensure that HMRC can become a ‘Digital by Default’ organisation.

You will be involved in all elements of development, with a relentless focus on how the service will be used and will be involved in service design, code build, test, maintenance and support.

We need a team of flexible, skilled developers with a love of technology to realise our digital objectives. We will be using modern technology and agile development methods, and release as much of our work as possible as open source software.


Key responsibilities

  • Modern standards approach – use approaches that you can apply throughout automation and testing
  • Programming and Build – you will use agreed security standards and specifications to design, create, test and document new or amended software.- Designs, codes, tests, corrects and documents simple programs or scripts under the direction of others.
  • Provide Service Support – You will maintain and supports services, helping to fix faults following agreed procedures and carry out agreed infrastructure maintenance tasks.
  • Systems Design - Create the specification and design of systems to meet defined business needs.
  • System Integration – You will integrate and test components, systems and their interfaces to create operational services
  • Translate user stories and propose design approaches or services to meet these needs
  • Engage in meaningful interactions and relationships with users.


We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Logical and can apply good practice approaches to relevant standards
  • Passionate about IT, enjoys solving problems and different approaches to solving problems.
  • User focussed – understands users and can identify who they are and what their needs are.
  • Able to work with business and technology stakeholders to translate business problems into technical designs.
  • Able to visualise the ideal user service, come up with design ideas and possible design approaches.
  • A Team Player and is able to work as part of a team on the design of components of larger systems.
  • Aware of how to integrate systems and the challenges of designing, building and testing interfaces between systems.
  • Self-motivated, professional and open to continuous learning
  • Able to communicate technical and business matters clearly in lay terms for comprehension by multiple audiences
  • Able to facilitate collaboration and lead effective communication with all stakeholders to support design, build and delivery to meet the user need

Entry Requirements: 

  • 7 GCSE's A*-C including Maths & English Language 


Future Prospects: 

92% of QA Apprentices secure permanent employment after finishing their apprenticeship. Additionally there may be opportunities to undertake further apprenticeship training as many of our programs offer on-going development tracks.


Please note after you complete the Level 3 (13 months) apprenticeship you will then be progressed onto the Level 4 Software Developer (18 months) apprenticeship 

This role may require some travel with occasional overnight stays and you may be required to travel to a relevant training centre for your Apprenticeship training dependent on your location.
