SSE Engineering Craft Apprenticeship - Electricity Cable Jointer Positions Opportunities - 2019
Salary: Circa £10,000 with a yearly increase and company benefits
Thinking about life after school or perhaps a change in career? Maybe you enjoy fixing things or prefer being outdoors and doing hands-on practical work? Or perhaps you are looking for an opportunity to learn a new skill? We are delighted to offer two apprenticeship opportunities which will enable you to gain valuable skills and on-the-job experience, whilst simultaneously achieving an industry recognised qualification.
What Programme is available?
Our Apprenticeship Programme offers you the chance to earn whilst you learn new skills and gain valuable work experience and qualifications. The programme can take 3 to 4 years to complete and is centred on work based learning and training linked directly to the job.
By the end of the programme you'll have an accreditation that will offer you the opportunity to build a rewarding and successful career in the energy sector. Sustainability underpins everything we do so we believe in making the most of our valuable assets; our people, and supporting them to be their best. With a carefully designed development programme, you’ll have everything you need to progress your SSE career as far as you want to go.
What opportunities are available?
We have opportunities for you to join as an Apprentice Cable Jointer at our Slough office within the SSE Enterprise Contracting team.
The role offers you the chance to achieve a Modern Apprenticeship qualification and a City & Guilds Technical Certificate at level 2 or 3 depending on the role. They also offer you the opportunity to learn new skills that will help you build a successful career in the energy industry.
You will become a qualified cable jointer who’s highly skilled work involves connecting and jointing together underground electricity and telecommunication cables. Those cables vary in size and voltage. Those voltages can range between 230 Volts (like the supply to a domestic house) right up to 33,000 Volts feeding large substations. The tasks can include working on live cables up to 400 Volts. The work is mainly carried out outside and in all conditions.
The role offers a unique and essential skill in order to maintain and install electricity network supplies. In simple terms and to use an expression used by Energy Providers jointers are needed to ‘keep the lights on’.
You will be supported by both our Apprentice Programme Manager, a dedicated mentor and by your SSE colleagues who you'll work alongside during your programme. Additional guidance and support will come from your college tutors. Many of our apprentices attend college on a block release arrangement for several weeks at any one time; which may mean you may have to live away from home for a short period of time.
What do I need?
You don't need any experience to apply. You just need to have an interest in the work we do at SSE, an appreciation of our core values, particularly safety, and the desire to do well.
In terms of qualifications, we'd prefer you to have achieved or be on target to achieve a minimum of 3 GCSE's (or equivalent) which includes Maths and English and a Science / Engineering / Technical subject.
Candidates who do not meet this criteria, have other relevant qualifications and can demonstrate the desired level of competence through the assessment process will also be considered.
