Are you thinking about University but you're worried about tuition fees and student loans? Our Trainee Engineer programme provides an opportunity for you to earn a salary at the same time as learning. The programme lasts for three years and combines academic study with work based experience. Working within our Energy Networks or Generation & Renewable Operations business, you'll have the opportunity to study towards a HNC in Electrical Engineering for our Energy Networks business or a Foundation Degree in Power Engineering for our Generation and Renewables business.

All of our Trainee Engineers do spend some time staying away from home at college or university. This is usually for 2-3 weeks blocks once per term. When not studying, you’ll spend the balance of your time on placements which may include working in the field, at Power Stations and Control Rooms or working alongside experienced SSE crafts people and engineers.

By the time you reach the third year of the programme you'll be given increased responsibility in managing small jobs, including technical aspects, safety management and the supervision of crafts people or contractors. On completion of your programme you will be qualified to work as a Maintenance Engineer, Field Network Engineer, Project Design Engineer, Systems Planning Engineer or an Operational Control Engineer.

This Programme requires you to be highly organised and self-driven with the ability to manage your time well. You should be flexible in your approach to work to maximise your chances of success, and you should be happy working alone or as part of a team. You'll be comfortable to spend some time living away from home whilst attending college or on placements across SSE.

You should have, or be on target to achieve, Maths and Science (preferably Physics) qualifications at A2 Level (A-C) or SQA Higher level (A-B), as well as English at GCSE (4 - 9) or National 5 (Scotland). We are happy to accept applications from candidates with equivalent level engineering / technical qualifications.

Closing date for applications is Sunday 10th March 2019.

Successful candidates will start in September 2019 and will be subject to our verification and vetting process which includes a qualification and basic criminal record check along with drug and alcohol testing.
