Training as British Merchant Navy Deck, Engineer or Electro Technical Officer.

Deck, Engineer and Electro-Technical Officers in the British Merchant Navy play a central role in maintaining the extraordinary success story of one of Britain's leading industries. As an island nation we still rely on ships of the Merchant Navy to carry 95 % of our inputs and exports.

Sponsorship package include: A financial allowance which is spread throughout your training and paid monthly. The sponsoring company will also pay the tuition fees of the UK Nautical College you attend and supply the sea time aboard their ships paying for the travel to the ship and back to your home address in the UK.

Ships are crewed by specialist departments each offering diverse training opportunities and challenges with unique lifestyles.

All SSTG Deck, Engineer and Electro-Technical Officer Cadets follow an MNTB/MCA approved training programme. Most are three years in duration. To apply for sponsorship the minimum academic requirements are:

AdD. Foundation Degree Program: A-Level, Highers, B’Tec Diploma Level 3 or equivalent. A minimum of 48 UCAS tariff points (including a numerate subject for engineering) Plus four GCSEs at grade 9 to 4 (A* to C) and including the following subjects: Maths, English, Dual Science or Physics.

AdC. HNC HND Programs: Four GCSEs or equivalent at grade 9 to 4 (A* to C), including: Maths, English, Dual Science or Physics. 

The training is in 5 phases detailed below:

Phase 1:   Initial College Phase: Programme introduction, initial academic studies and professional safety training.

Phase 2:   Initial Sea Phase: Introduction to a life at sea, commencement of practical training recorded in the Training Record Book* and introduction to watchkeeping.

Phase 3:   Interim College Phase: Review of initial sea phase and continuation of academic studies.

Phase 4:   Final Sea Phase: Completion of Training Record Book, sea training workbook and watchkeeping.

Phase 5:   Final College Phase & the MCA Oral Examination:
This will usually be the last element of your training prior to qualifying for a Certificate of Competency. This will be a one-to-one interview/exam with an examiner appointed by the Maritime Coastal Agency.

It is an industry requirement for all candidates to undertake a Merchant Navy Medical examination (ENG1) and gain an unrestricted medical certificate. In most cases we will interview candidates and issue offers of sponsorship subject to obtaining a medical certificate.
