Volunteer Teaching Assistant in Ghana

Apply From: 1st of March 2012
Application Deadline:
Start Date: 30th of September 2018

Situated on the coast of West Africa, Ghana is a country full of beautiful beaches, lush vegetation and the world’s largest artificial lake – Lake Volta!

Although a stable country, many Ghanaians live in poverty, giving volunteers the chance to really make a difference. Volunteers can:

  • Work in a local school as a teacher - providing English, Maths and Science lessons, along with anything else you may feel comfortable in. In the past, volunteers have also set up after school clubs in subjects such as reading, art and sport!
  • Work as a healthcare assistant - perfect for anyone who wants to go into the medical profession in the future. Based in local health centres, typical activities include: looking after the pharmacy, baby monitoring and feeding, outreach and education campaigns and general patient administration.
  • Work in community development - a unique opportunity for a volunteer to gain experience in community-level international development. Volunteers have worked on programmes that support women's empowerment, HIV/AIDS education programmes, youth work and sustainable food production.
  • Work in sports education! You should have an interest in sports and be confident in focusing on raising awareness, training, peer education, resources development and teaching.

"It's so hard to choose a favourite thing about living in Ghana. Just a few things are the kids at the school and just in the general community were absolutely amazing, everyone was so friendly, welcoming and helpful if I got lost. But the freedom to teach what I wanted, when I wanted and how I wanted was just amazing in itself." - Aarron Conroy, Lattitude Volunteer (Feb 2016).
