Professional Qualifications

If you want to work at the top of your profession you will usually need a Professional Qualification.

Professional qualifications aim to develop knowledge and skills required for specific jobs in different fields and industries. They are normally promoted by professional bodies and are subject to European directives.

Professional qualification courses can last from a few weeks to a couple of years, depending on the level of qualification and the time spent working on it - part time or full time. Also, a mix of studying and working in the field is often required when getting a professional qualification. Sometimes apprentices require a degree or an equivalent qualification, though it's not complusory for all the qualifications and many careers can be pursued with no previous academic experience.

In the United Kingdom professional qualifications are generally awarded by professional bodies in line with their charters such as:

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA)
Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ)
British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM)
Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality (CTH)
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
Institute of Sales and Marketing Management (ISMM)
Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Have a look at the professional qualification opportunities listed in this section in different industry sectors. Once you have tracked down your ideal position, it's just a case of going for it and applying.
