Before joining the AWS re/Start program offered by Generation UK, I was working as a Financial Services Contractor. I had been working in this industry for over 4 years however when my final contract ended, I was unsure of what I wanted to do next as I did not want to carry on as a contractor and wanted to find a permanent job that was more stable. Whilst looking for new jobs and potentially a career change, I had considered working in the tech industry but never thought it would be possible to get a permanent job in tech as I did not think I had enough experience.

I joined AWS re/Start as I wanted to get into the tech industry but did not have much experience. I thought this course would be perfect for building my technical knowledge especially as it was with such a reputable company.

After graduating from the programme I secured a job in Sainsburys Tech as an Associate Data Engineer. In a nutshell I use various technologies, tools and systems to provide and implement solutions for improving data quality, reliability and efficiency.

How would you describe Generation in one word?

Mind-blowing! I never knew something like this existed and initially thought the program was too good to be true. I could not have imagined I would have gotten a job so quickly after graduating and still be in that job. I was also blown away by how much I learnt in a short period of time. Also the mentor I had was so helpful and went above and beyond to make me feel supported.

Before joining the programme with Generation, I had worked in Escape Rooms for a few years. Due to COVID, my most recent place of work had closed and I had been on Universal Credit for 4 or 5 months, while job hunting and working on personal projects.

Programming has always been a hobby of mine, and it seemed like a great opportunity to turn it into a career without the need to have been through a university course.

I hadn’t considered a job in DE or wider programming before joining the course, primarily because I didn’t know of a way to enter the role without qualifications that I didn’t have. The course gave me a great in-road to make that career change.

I now work for Infinity Works, which is the consultancy that tutors the Generation DE course. My job role is an Associate Consultant. My role is still coalescing as I’m currently in the onboarding process, but I will be consulting and engineering cloud-based platforms for clients, the specifics of which will vary from account to account.

The course has allowed me to change from my previous jobs to what now feels like the start of a legitimate career, something I’m passionate about and which holds the potential for real development and progression. I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me, and my parents might be even more excited than I am!

How would you describe Generation in one word?

Genuine. This course is clearly not a tick-boxing exercise – everyone involved really care about the development of the students, and are willing to give as much time, knowledge and support as the cohort needs.
