Apprenticeship on an Ancestral Visa

His there. My son qualifies for an ancestral visa. His grandfather was born in the UK. My son has just turned 18. He will be coming from South Africa. He has not got any GSCE''s. I am currently living in the UK and will be supporting him. I spoke to 2 local colleges about apprenticeship programs and it looks very exciting, they said he would be able to join the program and because he is 18, he might qualify for funding. What I want to know is, will he be able to study for an apprenticeship on an ancestral Visa? When I looked online, the visa qualifies him to live, work and study in the UK for 5 years, after that, he can apply for his citizenship. Someone posted a comment on a FB thread and said he would have to be living in the country for 3 years before he can apply for an apprenticeship. Is this true?

CHANGES have been made to funding from MAY 2017
As far as we understand, if he has the right to work here; the company can apply to fund his apprenticeship training.

If the visa has a clause 'right to access public funds' then all is clear, but for first hand legal advice, the Goverment help line is 0800 015 0400 - ask for the help desk.
