becoming an electrician

I am currently in full time employment as a credit controller, I am wanting a career change and to become a qualified electrician. What is the best way to get into a role like this as I am unsure whether I should go down the apprentice route or pay for training.
The end result is you need a level 2 then level 3 diploma - qualification that includes the latest IEE Wiring Regulations - and that could come through an apprenticeship or through paying for private tuition.
The apprenticeship will offer you a wage and the training is paid for - great advantage - but tough and competitive to find. When looking don't ignore electrical engineering (might be an electro-tecnical qualification) - the qualifications can be very high. It might also include testing and inspection. Top Tip - find your local electrical supply centre (like a City Electrical Factors or similar ,maybe independent, company). That's where elctricians hang out - go and introduce yourself....
